I have a huge amount of feather duster worms growing in my sump over my DSB. Was wondering if these guys need light? They seem to be thriving in there but they dont get any light at all, Except for when i am working in the sump and i switch the light in the cabinet on. Besides any light requirements, and of course food, what else do these little critters need?

Not sure of the species but they have brown tubes and their feathers are white with little dark spots. They are growing on the glass, rubble and filter baskets which house crushed coral. Will try post pics later if needed for ID?

    Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, they are not photosynthetic, and thus do not need light for growth.

They are filterfeeders, and will ony grow / multiply if the conditions are favorable. That isthe place where they find sufficient food in your system.

Their tubes ar made up from calcium, so I would recon that your Ca levels should not be too low.

Some websites also advise that you feed phytoplancton, although that is only recommended in the case of the decorative feathers like cristmas worms etc.

I add nothing special to my system other than fklakes, the occasional reef paste as a treat, and fuel(weekly -if I remember) and I had lots of small feathers growing in my filtration area.

they are filter feeders. And will multiply as long as you got food for them, obvious there are enough food.
Actually they are helping you a lot it cleaning your tank. Let them be.
