    Hi Guys

I need your expert advice on the attached pictures. Can you guys perhaps tell me if it will be possible to convert "this" section into a marine tank or is this section (1800 L x 2000 H x 1200 W) to big in terms of the glass thickness that will be required?

can be done with really thick glass, but how are you going to work in the tank and where would you put the filtration?

suggest you build a stand inside the area, clad it with woodwork and have a Display tank on the top and the filtration under the stand !

working in a tank 2m deep is simply not feasable in that space

    Niel's right.

Even if you left space at the top for access, and foung somwhere else for the filter, you would still need probably 60mm glass or acrylic on a 1500mm high tank.

The maintenance thing is the biggest problem, putting on your wetsuit will loose its fun factor pretty quickly.;)

agreed with neil about the depth, also the light penertration through a water collum that deep will require heaver expensive lighting. i would invetigate a stand like neil suggests, eslecially as you ahve great height there.

that is however a fantastic size (width and length) for a mixed reef set up and being able to view panoramic would be great. it could be a great tank.

perhaps ask Idol Marine or bob the reef builder on their advice, they ahve the best reputaion for custom tank builds in JHB.

what is behind the rocks (kudu) area, can u drill through there to make a fish room for sump and filtration?

True... Another thing that was also bugging me was that will the glue/silicone be able to withstand the water pressure at that depth. What would you suggest is a safe water depth?

personally i would not go more than 70cm depth on that tank ! anything deeper and you will start having light penetration problems !

Behind the kudu area is a double garage where I thought I might install the filtration but now that you guys giving me a much more bigger view of it all... I think the stand option will be a much better option to go for

Build a stand about 900mm high and a tank 700mm high. This will give a height of 1600mm. You can leavea gap for lighting and for you to do tank maintenance

i would put a tank on a stand in the middle, with a drywall on the bottom and top, door on the side ? not sure if this is the only entry to the room in the back ground ?

to give you the idee --> Craigg’s Reef Tank

well keep that space open, havinga *fish room* is always great, especially if you look at building on a frag set up or additional sump space.
