evolutionary trait on some anthia species

    hi sara,
    i was taking pics the other evening and was wondering if you or anyone else could shed light on the purpose and function of the small beak like protrution off this anthias upper lip. they all have it and I was wondering what the function is?

    I'm sorry... I actually don't know all that much about fish (compared to coral). Let me ask a friend who does...

    hmmm a possiblity i am sure, although its on both males and females so i am not sure thats it?

    I do lurk a lot... but I'm feeling a bit out of the loop. I haven't had an aquarium of my own in awhile now... and omg, I'm using my camera to take pictures of... ::gasp:: people! lol

    NOOOOOOO dont do it....seriously people damage lenses and enthusiasm for good marine pics. go takle a pic of a marine slug or something:) ok youd probably call it a nudibranch;)

    My females are more violent than the old boy, hence you buy them all the same size, yet the weak seem to get smaller and the dominant females get bigger.

    Interesting question, never noticed it really.

    The only thing I could think of is a feeding adaptation , maybe to create a "suction power" to assist in getting its food ?

    perhaps its and aimig aid? when you get closer to the tiny food particles they would normally blur if they focussed on an object slightly closer your periferal vision would come into play and make the object seem clearer? or possibly a defence tool such as the spike on centropyge species? all speculation of course...
