I picked up a small (2cm carapace) Emerald crab from Idol Marine last Saturday. After acclimatising it, I added it to my tank and within SECONDS it was munching at my hair algae. Today, 9 days later it has made significant inroads into the rest of it. Another few days and I am going to have to start feeding it nori.

I really recommend an Emerald crab to combat hair algae - they are algae eating machines. I really woudl never have believed one small crab could each so much in such a short space of time.

I second that. So hard to get in Cape Town though. It really is the best addition for a clean up crew for keeping most algae in check even red slime.

Are yours also algae eating machines?

You may find you'll need to give one away once the algae is gone.

If you can, can you post a pic of the algae eating crab? I'd be keen to try find one and give it some work to do.

Not sure why these aren't imported more often. They're dirt cheap and seem to do a good job...at least until they get big and become a small risk to fish.

I love the shape of their pincers. It is the same as a finger and thumb being pressed together. I enjoy watching how they close pincer and rotate it to rip algae off surfaces.
