I did because my rockwork is a bit heavy and had a few sharp pieces on the bottom that i didnt want resting directly on the glass.
Better to add rocks then substrate because things dig and if its done the other way around, there is a risk that the rocks will fall over.

What about the guys that dig a bit deep & open up the eggcrate? Just close it up when they done:biggrin:

seeing eggcrate or bare patches of glass.
You eventually accept it. Its not the nicest view for pictures. At least the eggcrate kind of prevent bare patches.
