Eggcrate Base

Hey guys,

Has anybody used eggcrate as a base to place rocks & then add substrate afterward.

I read somewhere, that some use it to project the bottom of the tank while aquaplaning.

I did because my rockwork is a bit heavy and had a few sharp pieces on the bottom that i didnt want resting directly on the glass.
Better to add rocks then substrate because things dig and if its done the other way around, there is a risk that the rocks will fall over.

What about the guys that dig a bit deep & open up the eggcrate? Just close it up when they done

I have a very shallow sand bed so this happens very often. I used to cover it but couldnt be bothered anymore. It gets covered in coralline very quickly and is barely visible

Eventually you give in and accept seeing egg crate...I also could not be bothered by it anymore.

You eventually accept it. Its not the nicest view for pictures. At least the eggcrate kind of prevent bare patches.
