So, just getting my tank to start up and cycling and... one of my MP40's completely seized. The magnet is melting to the plastic housing on the wet side. What is going on?! It spins for a minute then locks up, and boom, done, melted!

So upset, this is an expensive setback!

Anybody else had the same issue?

    Never heard of that happening!
Is it a new unit or secondhand?
Can you post a pic of it?

Pretty much brand new, bought it in China in Jan 2015, had it in my tank for 6 months then moved back to SA. Put it in the tank 2 weeks ago. Now this happens.

I can post a pic this evening.

sounds like the ceramic bearing has broken out of the mount, will need to replace it with a new wet side

Seems like the don't sell spare parts, just a whole new wet side. Will check at my LFS tomorrow. Hope this is a freak incident!

the rubber spacer is most likely not set to the correct glass thickness.
You can take the wet side apart and ensure that there is nothing behind the magnet.

Spacer is set to 12mm, glass thickness is 12mm. Checked the wet side and there are no obstructions, however, what does seem to have happened is that the main screw and end bolt are not getting tight enough which is resulting in very minor wobbles happening. Can't get the screw any tighter though.

Just ordered a new wet side. At least it comes with a new warranty again, fingers crossed nothing happens! LFS tells me that the new wet side on the quiet drive model is much more robust so here's hoping!

yes, happened to me as well previously.

The wet side nut, is just that little bit loose and then the impeller tend to run freely at times. It "melts" the impeller. Tighten too much and you strip the thread. I cut 2mm from the one impeller and used another nut to lock the first. With the stripped part between the two nuts. Works like that for almost 2 years now.

Sounds interesting! Not sure I quite follow though, did you cut the base of the impeller and replaced the standard nut with another one to tighten?

Sounds like something definitely worth trying!

Front end of the impeller, where the nut sits. Just shaved a mm or 2 so that I could fit another similar nut to act as a lock nut.
