yes achilles are major line food fish in hawaii that is why they look for scape goat in the aquarium trade; there is also a dark side to the conservation movement that has other agendas that people are not always aware of

Altough this might be a disturbing thing for us reefers to witness, especially considering what we pay per fish. However, we need to bear in mind that people need to eat. Just cause they are pretty does not make their protein value any less.
I have caught a few hundred kilos of tangs, taken out rugby ball size clams and hunted turtles, all as a food source to the poorest of the poor. Its all about exploitation in a manner which does not impact sustainability. Bear in mind survival versus the luxury of keeping exotic pets.... Justify what we do in collecting fish for display to a starving person.... Surely not the case in Hawaii, but trust me a lot of exotic fish get taken for the food trade or even worse for the pig food trade in africa.
    Its all about perspective.
Granted, I share your sentiment, but nothing compared to the slaughter which any of us support when we buy fish orininating from a longliner, prawns from a trawler, etc.
A lot of fish in that box? Hardly! Compared to the quantity of fish we haul in on one commercial handline boat in one morning?
I am not familiar with the health of the achilles tang stocks, and truly hope it is not an endangered species...
That would make it an entirely different scenario. But are all hard corals not considered endangered species?
Don't kid yourself by thinking its for conservation... How many corals or fish have you lost? And what percentage of what is hartvesed for the marine ornamental trade actually survive?
oh and btw, all types of tangs and parrotfish I have eaten really don't taste good! A matter of personal taste perhaps,
But flesh too soft and a really peculiar taste,.

Bottom line, the balance is skewed! Turn vegan, judge not, live righteous and respect all of creation! Except seals, as they steal fish off your hook.

ziyaab i would not like to go too much into it but let me say the following some conservation projects masquerades as conservation but is in fact a business that rallies behind a cause which may not be scientifically proved just too make money!

oh my.. they are over-fishing the ocean so much that reef fishes are now getting taken..

Not right, the whole story about the marine trade is a no-no, but eating them is ok..in what world does that make sense?

The oceans have already been pillaged to death. Being a chef, ten years ago we used to get phoned by fish suppliers on a daily basis with about ten different line fish to choose from, red snapper, roman, rock cod, grunter, 74 etc etc. Now you lucky if you get kabeljou, cape salmon, yellowtail and never at once. The only fish really left and readily available are hake, butterfish (crap fish), snoek and kingklip which is not even kingklip but ling from Australia or New Zealand. True Kingklip is slowly disappearing and on the orange SASSI list. People are aquaculturing sea bream but guys are importing fish frozen from other countries. Salmon is being aquacultured in SA and imported which is cool but it is very expensive because they need an expensive diet to keep the pink/orange colour of the fish

Not Quite.... They take whats in the net or haging on a hook. Doubt whether these species were targeted due to overfishing of more palatable species. I suspect they were targeted because they were easy to catch.

When I lived in the tropics, schools of tangs would come into the shallows on the rising tide to feed off algae, easy target with gill nets. Was a God sent when the sea was too rough to venture out and we had nothing but rice to eat for a week.....
