I have no equipment as yet. I want to hold off on all of that until I understand all the mechanics and how to care properly for these creatures, as well as what equipment is better etc etc.

    Welcome Bronwen,

you have made a great choice in learning first and buying second, 90% of people who join here have bought and then ask ......

First thing you need to decide is what you want to achieve ...... do you want a tank that has rocks and fish only (FOWLR) or do you want a coral tank? there are 3 basic types of corals.... Soft corals (the ones that sway in the current) or SPS corals (these are the sharp ones that look like twigs) or LPS (sort of a combination of the two)..

for many of us a full blown SPS reef tank is the holy grail (check out Adee's tank TOTM Dec 09) for a great example of this sort of tank one of many on this forum.... my current tank is dominated by soft corals and LPS....

Once you have decided what you want to achieve then we can help you along in this quest ......

I honestly believe that MASA is one of the greatest collective knowledge bases on marine aquariums in south africa.... so you have joined the right community !

hello ron and welcome to masa, its great to have you join and study a little before starting out.

to be honest it takes ages to understand all the complicated things that are used in marines, either that or i am just really slow as i dont even understand it all yet. Its a long slow process and learning how to keep a marine tank is incredibly rewarding and satisfying if you follow some basic principles.

Ask us all the questions you might have as masa has some excelent and helpful reefers, we will do all we can to help you avoide the mistakes we have already made.

    welcome and happy posting

then its def a good idea to join a reef club and also go around and see some of the beautiful tanks in JHB. Also try go to Idol Marines (look in our sponsors section, but we have a number of very good sponsors you can use in jhb and pta) in midrand to see some equipment and get an idea of what you would like to achieve:)
