Hi guys. Have spoken to a few people who have a dsb in their sump, but the more advice I get the better. What substrate exactly do I put in it (as well as to grow macro-algae) and what are important things to remember? Want to start this as soon as possible. My tank is 1.2x60x60 (572 liters with sump). Tank alone - 488 litres roughly.

I use playsand. Some guys do not like it, but I do not have issues with it.

I use 3 different types of substrate in my DSB. I use sugar fine at the bottom, and then a slightly coarser grain above that, then a mixture of sugar fine and live sea sand i collected on the top. so far it works well for me.From what I've read and heard so far it needs to be fine, but i tend to experiment to see if there are other options and what it does.
