Guys still playing around with the idea of moving some of my engine room outside (Ok the scrubber wont work :p). Now my following thought

We manufacture 10 mm plastic panels (food grade HDPE) 500 x 500 mm, I am thinking of building a sealed / enclosed container from this 1 mtr sqr x 500 h which will be fed from my DT via overflow.

Water will then be returned to my current sump via gravity

As for temp fluctuations I was thinking of enclosing it in polystyrene / space blanket (thanx Jaco)

The distance the water would have to travel in the pipes outside the house would be about 300 mm

    Any thoughts ?

My Engine rooom as more than 300mm from my DT and its the best thing I ever did. Its not outside though..

This includes a remote DSB and Scrubbber that is totaly seperate from my sump as well. Have a look at my thread. Ashraf's window into the reef - Page 15 - Members Systems and Setups

Here is a pic of the setup above my sump in the remote engine room as well

or you can use a 1000L container. Half full it adds 500L. 15cm deep remote sand bed. Enough space for big cheato ball in 350mm deep water. Lights mounted inside top open 500mm space (just waterproof it) And put isolation around it.

Now how is that for planting an idea seed...

Thanks for the input guys

@ amalick...your build was actually one of the threads i stole some ideas from!;) Well done mate

@ Riaan was also thinkg a plastic drum / jo jo tank etc. The only reason for thinking our panels is the thickness 10mm gives you a very solid structure and would help with insulation. and also being a "knock down" product i can add chambers, customised, drilled etc. And I get them for "free";)

This is what they look like, maybe it makes more sense.

The individual paneld (these are 250 mm sq)

    Hi,
This is a very cool idea!
Mine is outside aswell (actually I have two outside). Plus my frag setup is outside as well!
Polystyrene will help with the temp drops, but I'm not sure if it will be enough on it's own.
I've build a brick wall around my DSB's as well - this helped alot as well!

Another thing - watch out for direct sun light on the DSB, as this can heat up the sand quite a bit - I've found that my one DSB that was exposed to direct sunlight crashed...It turned 100% black (the rotten smell black!)

But now that it's covered it's doing very well!
    Good luck!;)
