    Hi guys and gals
Im plannin on raising everything 'in' my tank and was wondering.
If i had to use playsand/agronite in the DT as a DSB will it work or not?

Yes, nothing wrong with that, I am currently running a DSB in my display tank, Rory is as well, the other nice thing is that you will be raising all your corals closer to your light.

It will work as long as you don't disturb it with vacuuming the gravel

It will definitely populate with life over time, but it's always a good idea to give it a kick-start and seed it with some live sand if you can.

If you make the DSB 10cm's then you would need roughly 360 pounds or 165 kg's of sand. So if you use the 20kg bags of playsand (must be heavily washed) that will be 8 bags x about R40/bag=R320.00. Aragonite will cost you about 17 million rands.:p

You could just buy a bag or two of aragonite and mix it in with the playsand, that's what I did, 1 big bag of playsand and 1 small bag of aragonite. I put the sand in first then put the aragonite on top.

Agro is better though aint it. (Should it also be washed, and must it be in RO water) So it cant be mixed? Must be layered?

Aragonite is apparently better, it is claimed to have some buffering capabilities, some of their sand (caribsea) is also sold as 'live sand' as it is wet and has bacteria in it. Some of it must be washed and some of it not, it will tell you on the bag.

Mixed or layered - I'm not sure which is better, but my personal preference is to have it layered so that all the aragonite is together so it can do whatever it is that it does, I think :p

I'm going to be setting up my DSB soon in my DT. DSB will be layered with "gravel tidy" between layers. My top layer will be about 25 -30 mm before exposing the gravel tidy to prevent fish etc burrowing too deeply or undermining rockwork. Also makes it easy to siphon off a small section of this layer to rinse / clean from time to time.

does the play sand not blow around in the DT??

Hey Kavir have you considered going bare bottom??? no cost unless you want to stick black plastic on the bottom.

Hi Kavir - sorry for only getting to your thread now. I was a wee bit busy this past week.

Have a look at my tank's thread (in my signature).... you will see a tank with a DSB in the DT!

The "buffering" reaction can only occur in an area where the pH is below 7.0, and this can only happen deep down in a sand bed (if it happens at all...). Having a layer of aragonite on the surface of a deep sand bed will only look good, but won't do anything else.
