Ok, so here goes, after much deliberation, and "fiddling" with the nano, the time has come to upgrade properly to something I can really enjoy! This system started with a 4ft corner overflow tank setup that I bought second hand for a bargain including a sump and skimmer. The display tank was in really good nick barely a scratch on it, the sump and skimmer however are surplus and for sale as I have built a much larger sump, and installed the TS2 that i had in the cupboard for that "one day" occasion that came sooner than I thought!!

Shot of the sump, tried to keep things simple as possible, just 3 chambers. Sump is 1100x450x450. Dividers are 310 high. DSB is 600 long, took 85kg of coralsand/aragonite/oolithic mix to make 160 deep bed!!

The tank ran for a week with just NSW and aragonite, I then added 10kg of Indo LR... looks like nothing!!

    a week after I added another 25kg....

and then rescaped a bit with the fionce as a judge, LOL!

    The water had cleared nicely.

There is also 4 pieces of ceramic base rock under the LR scape to help with volume and flow. Actually works fantastically! The shape of the pieces really allows a nice open base for waterflow. (once they sink LOL)

So after the tank had been running for 31 days, and after the nitrite levels had dropped to 0.00, all was nice and stable, with Diatom algae starting to bloom on the glass and gravel. It was time to introduce some life! I transferred my 2 Ocellaris clowns and the Green Star Polyps to the tank. After acclimation all was well and the clowns were feeding 10min later!

looking really good man! Why did you not just use play sand for your DSB?

Hi Tremayn, TBH I wish I had actually, i had heard a lot of guys saying that it can leach silicates etc, and a mate of mine used it and complained about it causing cyano and diatoms which caused him to redo his DSB and has since had no problems. Uncharacteristically, I only did some proper research on the subject after I had already purchased the substrate and setup the tank. I read some very interesting overseas articles on the subject, and If i could turn back time i would use playsand. Would have saved some serious dosh!!!

    ,

    Thanks bud!

The overflow is quite simple, the box is 150x150, with a drilled bottom, with a 32mm threaded nipple, I used 2 cheap rubber seals, one on each side under the "nuts" lol, (for lack of a better description.) and it seals perfectly without using silicone. The threaded section stick up just enough for a one sided 32mm threaded coupler to screw on nice and tight, with a plain section of 32mm pvc glued into the other end about 50 long. This allows my durso to just "push" on for easy removal or tuning. I experimented with the durso standpipe for days, and could not get it to work properly!! i even resorted to putting an air valve on the top, which allowed me to control the water level perfectly! however it still "burped" every now and then, and pulled a lot of bubbles into the sump which was causing salt spray all over everything. I resorted to installing a pvc ball valve on the pipe going into the sump, which works perfectly allowing me to control the water level in the overflow chamber to keep it quiet, as well as creating smooth flow into the sump with no bubbles.

I also cut 4 pieces of 6mm glass into "tabs" and siliconed them into place in the overflow to create a "ledge" on which to place a square of eggcrate on top. this allows me to place filter floss or sponge there as a mechanical filter. works a treat.
