This is the design for the stand, 50x50mm square tubing 2mm thick. Do you think it will be strong enough?

I would add more triangular support to the bottom part of the stand. Just be sure you can still slide the sump in

I was thinking about adding a removable upright for the centre of the main opening. Do you think that will help?

and i would def go with a wider tank, much better
1500x800x600 and you can still use 12mm if water at 580mm
you will need a double base

What substrate do you guys recomend for the DT, also what do you think of using the Carib Sea primo reef rock for most of the rock in the tank with about 10KG's of LR?

I read somewhere that sea sand has a bit of a yellow color and doesnt look as nice in the DT as the aragonite, maybe Ive been misled?

Thanks Toppdogg, I'll go check it out. With regards to the width, the wife has spoken, I manged to get the permission to build and put it in the lounge, but she won't budge on the width, "doesn't want it overpowering the lounge"

    Hey Marc,

Always so much fun planing the start of a dream tank, so many things to consider at the beginning. You will be making decisions now that you will live with for the lifetime of the tank, so make them thoughtfully and because they suit you! (environment, placement, maintenance, viewing pleasure)

Immediately I agree with others here go wider, in my experience 800 is the border of economics. Beyond this prices go up(lighting, LR). The same applies to height, above 580-600 (Glass thickness) with the added considerations for maintenance and coral husbandry and placement.

Why is 800mm width a good width?
    Its more then 600 ;)
Depth perception in a tank is often lost and is of immense value when viewing a tank
The scaping options are better/easier, things dont look like they squashed between a wall of rock and the front panel
Fish will appreciate the length and the width
Lighting is your Economic decider here when dealing with width, and length.

    What lights are you considering?

Your stand looks great! Will you be galvanizing it? Or only powder coat?

From experience powder coating alone is not enough to resist corrosion in the salty environment.
