I purchased some magnesium chloride to start DIY dosing. I was happy to find (in retrospect) that I bought the magnesium suggested by Randey Holmes. Namely Dead Sea Works magnesium.

My mg two days ago was 1020ppm with the Red Sea mg pro test kit. I thought I may have rushed the test a bit and decided to test again tonight before dosing. Nice and slow with no distractions it came to 1200ppm. Massive difference but more believable I felt as all my live stock including a torch is looking good and I read that low mg can cause euphylia issues/death.

I wanted to see how a standard amount would affect my tank. The reef calculator said I should dose 208 grams to get to 1300ppm so I mixed 1000ml R0 with 100g MgCl and heated it slightly to dissolve. I dripped this into a high flow area over 2 hrs and tested an hour later. No early ill effects were noted. The new mg level was 1320ppm. I will test again tomorrow night to see if this was just error because I tested to soon after dosing because half the amount according to the calculator overshot the mark by almost 250%

If all goes well I will then start adding sodium carbonate until the KH is normalized and then try the Randy Holmes recipe.

Great stuff! Yes, the mgcl really works fantastic!
You might be surprised how fast kh can be absorbed in a lps/ sps stocked tank!

Thanks for the Protea Chemicals advice. I'm sure dosing can become tedious eventually but I didn't expect to enjoy this part of the hobby so much.

Until everything suddenly dies of course! Holding thumbs.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
Basically my question is can I get this product from a pharmacy supermarket or what type of place will keep this or should I go to a certain place that will obviously not be in secunda.
Hope you understand what I am asking. I am situated in secunda and variety of places is a problem

You can use epsom salts for magnesium from the supermarket. I've been using that only for my magnesium dosing.

    Sorry to hijack this thread
Hi, Marius how much Epsom salts do you dose in your tank.
The other question I have does anyone still use slacked lime (from dischem) and bicard in their tanks.
if you do how do you go about doing it

Slaked lime is a balanced additive for use in kalk stirrers. And I suspect quite a few people still use it.

I dont have a kalk stirrer so I dose the elements indicidually. I use baked bicarb for alkalinity.

For epsom salts, 1gram will increase magnesium by 98.61ppm in 1L of water. So just use that to work out how much you need.

I dissolve my powders in Ro and dose with the dosing pump. But you need to know what your consumption is first.

I see dosing only epson salt will increase sulfate in tank it should be mixed with magnesium chloride to get a balance so to increase your mag with only epson salts could be dangerous in the long run.
As mag is not a thing that should be dosed every day I personally think that buying a mag supplement from the lfs would be the best option.
Dont want things to turn sour by trying to save a few pennies.

Has anyone had any negative effects by using epson salts only for a prolonged period?

I guess when using epson salts and doing frequent water changes will be the answer but I am not a big fan of frequent water changes so I think I have to take a different route here.
@dallasg how do you keep mag up beacuse I read you also run your tanks without frequent water changes.

Just want to be certain about this before dosing anything

Calcium chloride for calcium, baked baking soda for alkalinity and epsom salts for magnesium.
