Ok , Im new to the whole 2 part dosing thing...Been using a carx all this time...

What I need to find out from those doing 2 part dosing is how much Calcium Chloride do you mix in a specific amount of water and how much Bicarb do you mix in a specific amount of water.

What containers are you using to keep the already mixed solutions?

Where do you get your calcium chloride and bicarb from?

If you have a SPS reef, whats your tank volume and how much solution does your tank use per day and how often do you have to top up your solutions?

Your input will be highly appreciated

    Thanks Ridwaan

@Ridwaan, I use diy 2 part dosing (& magnesium as well)

I mix 75ml calcium chloride to 1l RO & 50ml bicarb soda to 1l RO.

I keep them in normal plastic bottles.

For my 150l Display nano, i use 120ml alk & 75ml Calcium each day. (yeah, i know its a lot, but sps & lps in such a small tank SUCKS it all up...)

I need to dose daily otherwise my alk, cal & mg gets depleted in about 4 days...

Magnesium i dose only once a week.

    Thanks @Visser...very interesting info...
I have a 1000litre tank and only sps...Sps I will have to dose a lot more im guessing?

Since you have a smaller tank and I appreciate your input, I have a very nice looking dosing vessel which is divided into three(It came with my dosing pumps)...Each compartment holds 1.5 litrs of water...You can have it.
I will need to get bigger containers...

What type of dosing pump you using?

I forgot to mention that i got the chemicals from Protea chemicals in Johannesburg. (I think they got a branch close to you as well)

I just bought a Marine Magic triple doser from a guy who is taking a break from the hobby...

Protea Chemicals, Will give them a call.....Thanks again man!

Whenever you around Benoni side, you must pop in and collect the dosing vessel

    Thanks, I will call them...

So I should ask them for Calcium Chloride and what should I ask them for KH additive?

@Visser, when using these chemicals. Do they settle to the bottom of the container and need a shake up?

Sodium bicarbonate for alk & magnesium chloride/sulphate for mg.

    No, they fully dissolve.
You use 1l boiling ro water & add the alk / cal to it & stir till fully dissolved. Then allow it to cool to to room temperature. There might be a very slight amount of sediment, but you just pour off the liquid & use that in your dosing containers.

I mix about 5l at a time of each & it lasts me about a month+.

@Ridwaan, you ,might eventually need a Ca reactor. In my tank I started with only a Kalk stirrer but then my Alk kept dropping, before I got my reactor I was dosing 760ml of Alkalinity solution into my tank a day and it always hovered around the 6.9 range.

However, good luck with the dosing, I hope it works, but still think its a short term solution for a large sps dominated tank like yours.

problem is i cant find a dosing pump that can feed my carx 24/7 then i will be sorted...
My carx is currently t off ftom my return and im having problems to reset the drip rate everyday cos sometimes it just stops..maybe cos of pressure or lack thereof...i am not sure

Dis you change your reactor media, is it finer ib texture? I know how you feel getting that bubble or drip rate is a hassle.

As a standard I dissolve 100gr of powder, either calcium chloride or baked baking soda in 1L of RO.

I use 2L containers for my doser and it lasts a bout a week on my 700L system. I have in the past dissolved 150gr of powder to 1L of Ro without any issues to make solutions stronger.

The correct ratios of Calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate are as follows (based on an equimolar uptake to form Calcium Carbonate).

147g of CaCl2.2H2O (Calcium chloride dihydrate) or 111g of Calcium Chloride (anhydrous) to 168g sodium bicarbonate.

The balanced chemical reaction to form calcium carbonate is

    CaCl2 + 2(NaHCO3) = CaCO3 + 2NaCl + H2O + CO2

Basically 1mol of calcium chloride reacts with 2 mol sodium bicarbonate.

1 mol of calcium chloirde dihydrate is 147g and anhydrous is 111g. 1 mol of sodium bicarbonate is 84 g so 2mol = 168g

So use these quantities/ratios in an equal volume of water each and IN THEORY you'd be adding a balanced amount of each. IN PRACTICE though uptake rates of these vary so you may need to tweak the dosing rates of one or the other to get Ca and alk balanced

    @Ridwaan,
Just an idea, why don't you keep your CARX running (What media where you using?)
And use the newly acquired dosing pump to dose other additives?
Just asking, because this is the route Im probably gonna go with the new build.
