HI All. I'm looking to buy a camera body on Amazon which is about half the price of what one would pay her is SA. Would I be hit for duties by SARS for importing a camera? I import DVD's with no problems and was wondering because of what it was SARS would want their piece of the pie.

Tony, you will get nailed for import duty and VAT!! Unless you can get the stuff to look used and the dudes you buy from state 2nd hand on the packaging...and even then its still noot guaranteed that customs will let it slide! Its a gamble we take...I also thought that Amazon stoped posting to SA and you have to have it courierd at some rediculous cost...like R350 per parcel minimum charge!

Hey Tony, All the guys are right you def will get charged. I've imported a few things cd'd dvd's, computer parts, and all got charged. What I have found is that on Ebay with private person's and not registered seller's they usually don't charge duty and vat but with Ebay you can't guarantee the quality and reliability of the people you buy from. I've had a few things not arrive. But for a SLR I would wait until you go oversea's or know of someone who is to get it for you. But saying that even customs in JHB airport is a lot stricter.

amazon dont ship to south africa anymore due to Post Office theft and claims, and if they decide to, they charge $120 plus for delivery etc

you might pay import duties, i know they did drop import tax on some electrical items, but look on SARS site they tell you

    Hi,

If the items that you import are liable for import duty then you will have to pay. I have imported DVD's & books on a regular basis from Amazon and have not paid any duties only VAT.
There was one exception where Customs charged me 5% duty as "all parcels from Amazon carry a 5% duty". I objected and was refunded.
When you import any goods from anywhere just make sure that the customs tariff heading is indicated on the parcel and that is what you will be dutied on.

    Hi,
Been looking at buying the Canon 7D, EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens, 60M/sec UDMA 16G, and carry bag from BHPhtoVideo, amounting to +-R28k after conversion, incl. shipping. Surely VAT + import tax shouldn't be more than 20% of the R28k????
If that's so, you're looking at about R34k in total, which is still far cheaper than getting it in SA. Is this a correct price estimate?
    Thank you.
