Do LED units degrade over time?

    Hi guys,

It looks like LED lighting units are the new way forward with regards to longevity and running costs.

I was wondering though, what's the life span on these things? And if they go, what's normally the first thing to go, the LEDs themselves or the controller/driver units?

    Thanks in advance!

Most likely your tank, they should last for 25000hrs, if anything the power supplies from a surge or something

diferent qualities on the market and loadsa chines led... so it depends on wat leds,be it cree or osram... they also have diferent ranges for diference quality builds, there is alot to it and with proper research you should get the proper answers... or maybe ask @butcherman ,his well versed in leds

I use to replace T5 and MH globes every 6 - 12 months.
I have run my LED's for a year and still going strong!

They say LED's can last for like 10 years. But the proof will be in the pudding. being an electrical device anything can happen that causes them to malfunction, but i think the degradation period is far longer than conventional lighting.

if you are doing a diy build the leds should last longer if you reduce the power to them. You can usually drop the power to 50-60% of the rated amount and get 80% of the light output. At least thats how it works in signage. We would rather drop the power and use more leds to make up the 20% loss in light output. The cost of the extra leds is made up for the power savings and increased lifespan of each led due to the lower running temps. Bit of a shlep to tweak your diy build but a lux meter should work fine for checking the output drop.

with bought units manufacturers will generally have done all of the above and will offer a 2yr warranty. With signage we offered the same 2 yr warranty on leds....seems to be the norm despite longer life expectancy.

i recall a 20% degradation of output after 2yrs being reffered to as acceptable in a meeting at some point. I might recall wrong...i tend to switch off in meetings if i can.

Also professional units will last longer if you run them at lower outputs

What's the batch consistency like? Anybody ever buy two or more units that didn't perform the same?

This has been siting in the back of my mind for a while now. Yes, we know that we need to replace T5 and MH globes ever so often... Even though they still work and seem pretty bright, their lumen output and consequent PAR values have been studied over time and measurements have proved that they have to be changed.
I have not come across any such studies for LED units..... Being on the verge of biting the bullet and splashing on a LED fixture, I would hate to find out after a year that my PAR values are 30% less than when I bought them... But at least we are talking less than a hundred rand a LED, but then again there are quite a few to replace........ The rated lifespan of 10 000 / 25 000 / 50 000 hours is rated lifespan, not rated maximum par outputlifespan. I have T5 globes which still work eight years later..... Pretty sure they have burnt thousands of hours.... But can they still grow corals...
    Guess only time will tell.

Really dunno how valid a point it is, but until a manufacturer assures me that there is no drop, i think twice on spending the cash.. My knowledge on this whole LED bandwagon is really minimal, really feel like a noob all over again.

Just had to go and quickly find something. From threads on RC it seems like after a year pretty much the same par readings..
Also saw a post where par actually increased, but thats just a post on a forum....
Where is Sanjay and Dana Riddle when I need them.

Well I doubt it has been done before and LED's have been out for a while now, maybe some of the guys that have LED's running for a while now can do a test for us? I think @butcherman has his tank under LED's for about a year now if Im correct?
How's about a comparison of PAR/LUX/PUR from then and now?:)
