Yes Thats one of the most important to use.
Ull need it to measure the salt water when you do water changes.
And to check every couple days, that salt creep isn't removing to much salt.

    Get a Refractometer ( First Choice )
Or get a Hydrometer as they are about 1/3 of the price, but they arn't very accurate

Well yes and no, IMO depending on the size of the system. The smaller the system the more critical.

I have a Buyo TL550 would it still be crucial for a tank that size?

    Dorrey.

If buying a Hydrometer is an issue. are you sure you want to get into this hobby?
Take it from me, Do it right the first time.
No half measures, because its just going to cost you 5x more in the long run.

Can you explain what equipment you are running?
    and whats in the tank?

I would say yes to anything under 500L as the swings in Salinity due to evaporation, salt creep etc can be quite drastic. If a refrctometer is too expensive then get a good hydrometer and check it against a refratometer, then mark the hydrometer. It is not too critical what the salinity is 1023, 1024 or 1025 range the secret here is consistancy. The salinity must not bounce up and down.

Do I even want to know the price of a Hydrometer and a Refractometer? What can I expect to pay?

As long as you mark your salinity measured against a refractometer, it should be fine until you can afford something better.

And you think a hydrometer is better? One micro bubble and you desalinize your tank because you think it needs RO? Or a bit of salt build-up and you add a bag of salt?

As discussed on her post from yesterday, as long as you use one measurig device to keep your salinity stable.

I don't even want to start on expensive Refractometers. Calibrated before my eyes, three different LFS' "Expensive" refractometers gave me three different reading. By as far as 0.008!!! So how do you explain that one?

Just wash your glass floaty thingy (can somebody please help me with a name?) and it will serve you well.

Most important is to use ONE measuring device to keep salinity stable.

    i taste it! :coolgleamA:

just joking, i use one and only one Hydrometer. the more you use the more different readings u will get. the more readings, the crazier you will become..

one day when i'm big i'm gona buy me a Refractometer. :)

maybe some one can hook a brother up?
