I decided to do a setup the same way as I used to back in the 80's and technology is here to stay but I guess I'm stuck in my old ways.
Surely there are much more efficient methods but I thought I would give it one more try.

DT.100x60x70 built with 10mm float glass and braced top and bottom.
    Stand. 50mm sq-tube and 80cm high,galvanised.
Sump.60x40x40 over and under method using crushed coral and Siporax.
Drip system.80cm high with compartments filled with crushed shells & coral plus Siporax.

Total water volume including sump is 520L.

The tank got wet on Friday(10/01/14) and refilled with RO water on Saturday after the leak test passed.
Salt added on Sunday and added the nice bacteria stuff last night.

I'll load pictures from my home PC because photobucket at work is blocked.

    great idea!
you had a sump in the 80's, my first tank 20+ years ago had it all built in the back, i then added a thiel aquatech filter system and used a green koi pond filter above

if you looking for a air driven skimmer i have one

@dallasg you are right, the sump as we know it today didn't exist but we all used the same over and under method, even modified plastic containers.

I do have an old airstone skimmer and beleive me I'll use it just for old time sake.:)[IMG]

Lol the old Saunders airstone skimmer I had one of those 20 years ago. Crushed shell aint gonna work detritus trap and there are much beter things now for biological filtration than siporax.

Today is the beginning of week 5 since I added water and on Saturday I saw the first growth on the rocks. Now I need to buy a test kit but don't know which one, please pass on some advice.

The Red Sea Marine Care test kits are great, or you can buy the individual Salifert kits.

Finally, tank cycled and the cleanup crew was introduced on Sunday, two hermits, two turbo snails and an urchin.

One fish that has to go in is a Polkadot Grouper so no Nemo for the kids at this stage.:(

According to the Bulk Reef Supply site, The water level should be between 24 and 28 cm.
