I want to eventually place a mirror under my hood to reflect the lights back, currently my hood is painted white with varnish, what would be a better reflecter untill I put a mirror in? Would tinfoil work?

Mirror is not a good reflector. Rather use alanod (highly polished aluminium) or decent reflectors
in the meantime, tinfoil untill I can upgrade?

Because of the wrinkles in the foil by the time you got it in. It reflect light in every direction. Where the white paint reflect in one direction.

I have been using a mirror for quiet some time and does help ALLOT with reflecting light back into the tank. But I do not have any coral that requires hectic lighting requirements! I actually bought Alanod this last Monday to make my own reflectors and modify my hood to add my MH's that I bought. You also get two types of Alanod...86% reflective and 92% reflective. The prices are different, but apparently the difference is huge! Will never know as I just bought the 92% reflective one! PM me if you want details!
