    Hey guys

im in the process of setting up my tank. i have 6 x 4ft t5's to light the tank. the thing is i dont have cash to buy a light unit! i need to build one. so for all you diy guru's out there here a challenge.

It CANT hang off the ceiling or get drilled into walls! so see if you can work around that :)

    Shot!

Can you rest a canopy on the rim of the tank?

Then build a canopy out of wood, that would be the easiest.

ad the same issue, ended up building a canpoy and it worked well for me. there's lots of sites on the net where guys document canopy builds etc.

you can get a sheet of 19mm pine for a couple of hundred bucks, some screws, hinges and varnish and you're good to go!

    good luck

So then you need to build a reflector type thing with feet to rest on the side edges of the tank

A piece of wood (marine ply), sealed, varnished and painted white, with 6 legs?

dude the guys on RC make a pipe frame that attaches to the back of the cabinet and then towers over the tank.. the light unit can then be suspended frpm the pipes.. neat simple and discrete..

that was the original plan but a bit of a mission right now. what im thing is marine ply with 4 little legs that sit on the bracing. and then when i need to work on the tank inside i just lift the front and put a pole of some sought to keep it up. like a car boot.

Mike is busy working on the tank. thanks anyway bru! you a legend

yo les. i forgot my mate works at a glass company and can organise me scraps. please sms me the dimensions for the pieces you need for my sump

another thing. for my lights, im planning on having a 1.2m x 55cm marine ply with 4 little legs that will sit on my bracing and this will hold my lights. would glass be a good idea instead of the wood? reason im asking is cos my mate has glass that can handle heat. what your thoughts?

im a little sceptical as the tank is only made out of 6mm.. lets have a look at its sturdiness once the braces are added and we can form a plan from there..

lighting is last on your list.. so you have time.. :)

Not a bad idea and cost effective is to get some white round PVC guttering, cheap very reflective easy to mount tubes and balasts!:whistling:

Neo it does well i've always used it and never had a hastle... I think you can see it if you look on my thread... 'Brent's 2.7m it has begun'... I think otherwise if not let me know and I'll take a pic tonight?
Nice thing is if you put the tubes near the top in the guttering you can put it straight onto the top of your tank coz you are about 5-10cm from the water... just watch splashing from incoming pump and circulating pumps:thumbup:
