Detritus ???

Second, how does it get past my filter sock ?
Third, what's a good way to keep it out my sump ?

It is a never ending battle

Just keep rotate your filter socks regularly and add a couple of powerheads to the sump to keep it in the water coloum

Or you can adopt an acceptance approach and clean it once or twice a year from your sump

Thanks Henkie. Why or how does it get through the sock though ? I see you can get different micron socks, does this make a difference ?

Different micron sock will make a difference.

Siphoning the excess detritus out every week while doing water changes is not funny anymore after a couple of years / months....
