Had this problem when I was running 10k metal halide bulbs and had lots of sunlight coming in in the afternoon...

Changed bulbs, closed curtains and did extra water changes, now glass doesnt get nearly as mucked up.

You don't have much SPS in there from what you are saying so I would slow down on the coral food to maybe once a week. My tank is loaded with SPS and I find that if I feed to often I get the same problem.

then its from your rocks and substrate possibly leeching phosphates

you see algae even though a primative life form, knows how to get what it wants and will get the phos "at source" from the rocks

yes you can remove it, but my bet is on the algae getting it first as they are "eating" out of the rock itself.

but adding a GFO will help and keep it close to 0
NP pellets will take to long to work

If the rock is the source, then rowaphos is very likely not going to do the job. It will remove some from the water column, but if it is leaching from the rock and substrate, then the algae will scavenge it before it gets close to your po4 remover! As dallas said, the algae is extremely effecient at scavenging nutrients. If however it is not the substrate, then there is hope. My recommendation would be to remove rocks one by one to buckets with clean water and "cook" them. Please search cooking rocks

Hi Quintin, is this new liverock that you bought or did it come from a previous system?

The tank is only 3 months old and already stocked, perhaps it's just going through the normal cycling process.

Before cooking live rock and the likes, just consider this. Paul Bloem also struggled with GHA with a relatively new tank and scrubbing, cooking etc of liverock did not really help. He even swopped liverock without success. It was good husbandry that resolved the issue.

I moved all of my liverock from my established and matured system to my current(new) tank and 3 months later I had bad GHA. So I doubt it was my rocks leaching phosphates, it was just the tank going through a cycle and me not used to the new tank and it's requirements.

After chaning and improving some of my routines the GHA is at last subsiding now.

The GHA by itself cannot kill your Zoas it can only starve them of light. Is it possible for you to just remove most of the pieces that's covering your corals so that they can at least get to the light?
