    Detailed help request
Are you experiencing any problems in your tank?
    Yes
    Brief Description
    Tissue necrosis on SPS colony
Ive had a fairly large acro for about 2 months that started showing slight necrosis on some of its tips on wednesday. This morning When I checked on it, It was also showing tissue necrosis in the middle of the colony as well as well as the tips getting worse, which was not there last night before lights off.

So to sum it up Its lossing tissue in the middle and some of the tips at the same time?
    Tank size
    45cm x 45cm x 45cm
    System Volume
    approx 100l
How long has your tank been running?
    4-5 months
    What livestock do you have?
SPS corals + a few softies and LPS approx 8 fish

recently split bubble tip anemone (not very healthy either)????
    Water Parameters
    KH 8
    Calcium 450
    phosphate not detectable
    Magnesium not measured
    PH 8.2
    Nitrate detectable but very low
    Nitrate 0
    Ammonia 0
Salinity LFS salt water (cheap hydrometer shows constant reading)
    Temp 24-25
What lighting is over the tank?
    150 watt halide

On friday last week I changed the bulb from a 10k dymax to a 20k BLV (can this be the cause? its not as bright as the old 10K bulb?)
    Pumps and equipment
I have 3x 200l pumps to turbo charge the water + approx 8000l of flow pumps
    Maintenance
    Daily buffer of KH (seachem)
    Daily buffer of calcium (seachem)
    Daily dose of Special Blend

    weekly 15l water change
    Other info and photo's.
So to sum it up Its lossing tissue in the middle and some of the tips at the same time? Ive had tissue recession on many of my other corals at some stage, but in the past its always been from the bottom, which I put down to KH fluctuations and low nutrients.

None of my other SPS corals are bleaching at the moment, but neither are any of them growing at the moment????:(

I have had a bubble tip anemone split recently and then start to bleach....can there be chemical warefare....none of my corals are touching.....

I am completely puzzled by what can cause this and what I can do to stop it I have invested a lot of time getting all my params as stable as possible.

    What can be the cause?

What do I do? I dont really want to frag any of my corals....

Is it bleaching or loosing polyps. The first thing i would do here is check for predators at night with a torch especially crabs.

I can see by the colour of the test that there is nitrate, but its reading is lower than the 1st measurment on the colour chart, if that makes sense?

I can in some area see the tissue starting to lift:( basically leaves the skeleton exposed

i would try and dip the coral, that would elimate parasites etc

has there been a change in alk recently, what is the salinity reading?

KH is basically always been the same....no changes between tests....buffering has done little to change it

I dont have an accurate hydrometer....I rely on LFS salt water....My currant hydrometer stays more or less the same level.

I should do an Iodene dip?

Your parameters all check out, i doubt its the new bulb, if it were me, i would also go for a coral dip in this case.

my guess is that the lfs water is not always the same, i have experienced changes when i used to buy premade water, if you want i have a refractormeter and dont mind "calibrating" your hydrometer.

yes an iodine dip, but let me check up something first

Bad idea this, have it checked with a refractometer.

    Necrosis Checklist

    Check for AEFW and redbugs.
Make sure your RO/DI water is O ppm.
Make sure your refractometer is calibrated correctly.
Make sure your test kits are not expired.
Make sure there are no nearby mucous producers, sweepers, nearby.
LPS, And softies. Softies produce mucous and they use allelopathy to ward off competetion. LPS use mucous and sweeper tentacles to sting, and kill encroaching tank mates.

I have noticed on a few occasions the sps colony thats having the tissue necrosis and another new colony will excrete a mucus from the tips from time to time....?

I have a stag horn that no longer shows polyp extension.....from about wednesday as well....

I've had this happen about 4 times myself in the years keeping corals. My biggest culprit was sudden change in alk. Of all the collonies the only way i tried to save was to cut about 2cm into the "live" coral and frag and hope it lives. Also I fragged and transported the pieces into another tank (they lived)...the fragged ones left behind did not.

Sorry, its a hit and miss game, just prepare yourself to do some cutting. I can't comment on the dips as i have never tried them.

The thing is I measure ALK often in the evenings and its the same all the time.....would evan the small fluctuations between dosing be the route cause?

Im SERIOUSLY over SPS corals.....They detract from my enjoyment of the hobby because Im always stressing over them staying alive.....I dont think my small volume tank is stable enough for SPS! F$*!% Is the word that comes to mind all the time

    So upgrade to a 1000L + tank?

Seriously, I know the frustration....sometimes, we just need to take a breath and regroup our efforts and energies. There will come a time when you will say, dunno what the fuss was all about...

I've lossed colonies due to my own errors, over corrected my alk from 6.5 thru to 14 dKH in less than 24 hours.

Whats bugs me is that I can seldom pinpoint the problem....and that most of the corals Ive bought are "wild specimens" so this makes them evan more difficult to care for.....:(

Your right I need to step back and take a breather so that I dont freak out....

    lol I wish....thinking 0f a 250l-400l tank....
