I suspect that one of my clown has gone over into the overflow and may have died. I have had a few fish wash up in my sump so I clearly have to fix my overflow design, but I am yet to see the clownfish (dead or alive) in the sump. My question is ... If a fish, snail, anything dies in the overflow and hence is not eaten by crabs, snails and worms ... what is the danger to the tank ? Ammonia ? Nitrates ? Phosphates ?

Depends on the size of the tank, and the size of the victim...

fish would be about 6-7cm and the tank is a 4-foot, 400 litre system volume

by now, it does not matter anymore. And the fish size is small.

If you got a ballvalve regulation the noise in a slimline overflow, then you better re-look at the overflow design urgently. If any fish blocks that valve, then you will sit with an overflowed display and dried out return pump.

I had a tomato clown get missing in my tank...After 3 months I sold the tank. On the day that we emptied the tank, the clown was alive and well in my overflow...lol

I would say there would be a spike in ammonia and nitrate if the clown died.

That's incredible !! But my overflow is a skinny wall-to-wall and only about 12mm wide ...
