    Hello Everyone,

I went shopping yesterday and wanted to spend some money until I saw the prices, Small Sailfin R1000, Small Regal tang R1500 medium rock with polyps R1400.

I purchased a sailfin two weeks ago for R490, they also had the same size Regals for R490, same size rock with polyps R690.

Then I saw they had frags R190 each, and there were like 3 polyps on.

    Not very impressed with them.

i have the same issue, bought a glass cleaner based on its profile not the name, paid R168 at a fairly big pet store but non sponsor.
Went to a sponsor shop and the exact same item was R399 - both in shopping centers, so comparing apples with apples here.

Should be nam3d and shamed as most of the sponsors offer very little to the members like reef2reef

on livestock it depends on the shipping. Depending on the volume of water per bag. Plus number of bags per box. The shops pay per box the airfreight. Lots of small fish and small bags, then the average airfreight distributed over the number of fishes is lower. Only a couple of fish and big bags, you got less fish to distribute the airfreight over.

Plus the originating county makes a difference.

Some shipments, like some shipments Idol Marine brings in are "supposedly" acclimatized before being sent out. They arrive from wherever in England, held a number of days to check that they eat, then shipped again. So you will end up paying shipment fees double on those fish and double taxes, into England and into South Africa. So expect them to be 3 or 4 times more expensive than fish imported directly from wherever.

It is not about shipments . They are just rip offs. Iwas in this business for 10years. They want you to pay for the fish an corals that did not make it.

Most pet shops in South Africa buys it from importers in JHB and Durban. They do and have all the paper work. Its very little shops that import themselves so one shop being very cheap and another very expensive is sometimes a rip off. Like in Cape Town. I know for a fact of 2 shops getting there stock from a importer in JHB. One shop is cheap the other bloody expensive. You can also notice they got it from the same importer as there stock and sizes are always similar. Theres no recommended retail price on live stock so everyone has there own price on what they believe is adequate.

They have to. If they want to stay in business they need to make profit. If the shipment is held up or temperatures drop then they'll lose a few fish. They'll need to charge more for the survivors in order to make up for the losses.

This is not just on livestock, they were way more expensive on equipment, salt, food.

The lovely thing about living in a democracy is freedom of choice. Support the stores that price better and in time the overpriced stores will be forced to adjust prices or close their doors.

Think we've all being subjected to being robbed by a shop at some point.
That said, it's not only this hobby that has vast differences in prices between shops. Car parts, electronics, food, are all the same..you have to shop around and find who has the best price. Often a shop with cheap hardware has expensive livestock or visa versa.

The solution is simple, walk out and shop elsewhere.

Thread closed due to requests for Naming and Shaming, you can use hellopeter.com for that.
