So after a long break I have decided to start again, there's not much going on in the tank currently, this will be a slow funded project, as the money becomes available it will be improved.

The lights on these tanks are amazing, not so much the skimmer which will be the 1st replacement to be made, if anyone has suggestions on a great, or the best skimmer available for this tank, without modifying the hood in anyway please I am open to suggestions. :)

@dan2381, off to a great to a great start dude, those corals look very familiar :)
From a quick look I would suggest adding some nice cured LR pieces to build up your bio filter.

Thanks Andre@ReefAquatics, some very nice corals you have in your shop , I haven't seen any nice pieces of live rock that grabbed my attention, but I am keeping a keen eye wherever I go.

True story, I've googled this tank to see if I could find any reviews, specially concerning the LEDs, but there doesn't seem to be any, I can even find this tank on boyu's official site. :032:

Ok so currently algae is becoming a problem so my 1st purchase would have to be a RO unit, as I've been using tap water :whistling:, but for all those with a TL550, I need some advice on the best arrangement of the filter in the back regarding placement of the skimmer, heater, filter material etc. I will be adding more pics soon once I have figured out my camera phone.

What algae do you have? And how long are our running your lights for? Tap water will definitely do that, i once got green hair algae from using ro water from a local water place, i switched to another store and it went away.

Mine is as follow from left to right 1ste compartment (return pump & heater), 2nd (Bio cubes & filter floss) 3rd (Skimmer) 4th (sponges & filter floss)

I'm not running carbon yet but will put some into the 4th compartment soon.

1st step you need to take is to use R/O.

Then start looking at your filtration.

1st chamber from the right: I would have filter floss and heater(water level stays constant and your heater will never be exposed)
    2nd chamber - skimmer
3rd chamber - purigen and phosguard
    4th chamber - Return

Not sure if yours came with the standard boyu filtration, bio balls, ceramic rings and the big black sponge.

I would replace the black sponge with filter floss and make sure to replace every 3rd day or so. when its dirty. Alternatively, make sure to rinse the blakc sponge every 2-3 days.

Then remove the bio balls and ceramic rings but dont do it all at once, I would remove the balls, then a week later the ceramic rings, a bag every 2 or 3 days untill they are all gone. This would give the bacteria time to recover. If you can , dose some bacteria(special blend or stability while you replace them)

I like phosguard and purigen in the back of a TL550, it worked great for me and still does in my bigger tank.

Looks like green hair algae, keeping the lights off seems to make it disappear but not completely, there also seems to be some red bubble algae, not sure what it's called as well as some green bubbles, I can only see a couple though, as for the lights unfortunately it doesn't have a controller @HOT SAUCE.

The most terrifying thing is the discovery of a single aiptasia, it will be nuked!!
Thanks for the info regarding the setup, I will be making some changes over this weekend, at the moment it doesn't feel like it's running at its optimum.

Some more pics, the mushroom is busy spitting out some unwanted pellets, it's easily the size of my hand, still trying to figure out the best setting for my sony xperia z camera, the camera keeps focusing on the glass. No idea what that long dangling thing is in the 4th photo, if anyone wants to take a guess, a bit of strange, looks pretty gross
