    Hi Guys,

    Firstly would like to say what a great forum MASA is, I recently joined and admire all the information on offer. I am not new to the hobby as I have had a 250 liter marine system running for approximately four years now and my dad had a system while I was growing up. I have always enjoyed the hobby but since I can remember I was always keen to have a large set-up, so I decided to give it a go and build my new 3500 mm(l) x 1000 mm(w) x 850mm(h) tank.

    Approximately 6 months ago I decided I would build my own custom tank. At first I was rather nervous as I had never attempted building anything out of glass and because of the fact that this tank would have to hold nearly 3 tons. I began to design the tank (With some Engineering experience), and decided to go with 12 mm glass as this would have a safety factor of approximately 1.5 without any bracing. Once my heavily braced design was complete I felt more reassured.

    I ordered the 12mm polished glass cut to size and got a box of Den Braven clear marine silicone. I began with the build. I wanted to take this extra slow, allowing each sectioned which was glued to dry for atleast 48 hours before proceeding to the next stage. The entire tank took me approximately 2 months to build, and while this was going on got one of my dads employees to start building the stand.

    Once complete I filled up the tank with water from my pool just to see if the tank would hold. I was please to see that design had worked as the tank did not budge. The only problem I now face is that the tank is still on the floor where it was built and it weighs about 350kg. But I will be getting a removal company to do the honors!

    Picture below shows the tank filled up.

    Display Tank: 3500 mm(l) x 1000 mm(w) x 850mm(h)

    Stand: The stand is made out of 60x60x6 square tubing as I wanted a strong base, It has the following dimensions, 3500 mm(l) x 1000 mm(w) x 850mm(h)

    Filtration system: I will be doing an array of Mechanical, Chemical and Biological filtration.

    Filtration "sump" Tank 1: This will be a refugium with DSB located under the display tank, 1500 mm(l) x 450 mm(w)

    Filtration "sump" Tank 2: Situated on a stand in the room next door, 1800 mm(l) x 600 mm(w)

    Filtration "sump" Tank 3: Situated below tank 2 1500 mm(l) x 450 mm(w)

    Once the tank is on the stand I will begin to set everything up, and willkeep you guys updated.

    Hi @Fanlie,

    The entire tank is built from 12mm glass. I was worried about the weight of the panes, I think the base weighs nearly 100 kg so carrying the base and front and back pane was already nearly impossible, haha !!

    quality build, well done for your first attempt, you can be very proud. I love the width youve choosen, it will give lots of room to aquascape and also have enough swimming space for a good population of largish fish:)

    Hi @gMAN,

    I will definitely be doing a mixed reef.
    @toppdogg,

    My plans for for now are to use a a combination of T5's and metal halides. One day I would like to upgrade to LED's but at this stage they are too expensive to cover the entire tank. What are your thoughts on the lighting?
    @mitchel,

    Thanks for the offer, will let you know if I ever need a hand.

    That's huge :eek::thumbup: plenty of room to swim with the fishes!!! Must take a country to lift that tank on it's stand and plenty of stress to boot also.
