Current USA Nova Extreme T5 X2 Aquarium Lighting Fixture, 2X54 Watt, 48 inch
    Features:
One 54 Watt TrueLumen 12K and one 54 watt 460nm Actinic Blue T5 HO fluorescent lamp
    Dimensions: 48" x 5.5" x 2"
    108 Watts
    Individually contoured reflectors
    Plastic mounting legs
Performance driven electronic ballast. No independent control over 10K and Actinic lamps.

Will this work for my tank? Do I really need it?

I've just got the regular fluorescent bulbs I had when I was running fresh water. Are there fluorescent bulbs I could just substitute for the ones I have; which would work for a reef tank?

    Regular, like it T8.
    No, rather "upgrade"
T5, thinner, more compact, more tubes per fitting or space.

You will get far better performance out of T5 tubes with a good reflector that T8 with reflector.

Are LED lights just for show, or do they help our watery friends?

LED is just becoming the new modern way.. Getting as bright as metal halides and big savings on maintanance and electricity cost...

you can use smaller LED's with T5 tubes for asthetic reasons

Went and bought a different overhead light, instead of the ones I had in the regular tank top. I'm taking it back. It's flimsy. A real bit of skimmer fixins... Someone had damaged it and put it back in the box. That's twice I've bought from that store to find parts missing or damaged; in the last week. I'm complaining to the management. I truly believe they are putting returned goods back on the shelf.
