You can add a lot more - try different snails, more hermits, brittle stars, maybe a sea hare or an urchin, emerald crab.

The greater the variety the better as each animal fills a particular niche/purpose

Urchins don't eat fish or coral. The short spine urchins are better imo because they are less likely to knock over corals.

Don't add cuc until your tank is ready, they are animals that need to scavenge and new tanks don't offer that.

Keep your hermits for now and see what happens after a month or so

I counted them when I moved my tanks over to the big system.
The micro bristle stars are now more...

I know some nerita snails did die. At times they fall off and will always land on their back. They cannot help themselves up and eventually the hermits will take them out. If I can see them in time I help them up. But sometimes they lie behind the rock work and I cannot see them.

Looks like he's an armchair mathematician - no prime numbers to be seen anywhere! :)

P.S - Clearly my clean up crew is seriously understaffed. 4x Snails, 4 (possibly three now) hermits, short spine urchin, sand shifting star and 1x skunk shrimp.

Mine as well, I need more snails and hermits. I think we in SA generally tend to underestimate the size of CUC required - possibly due to cost.

If you look at a place like liveaquaria.com they recommend packs for various size systems Their Algae Attack pack (for 30gallons system) contains 25 hermits, up to 16 different snails, blennie, sea slug and emerald crab.

Their detritus attack pack (ultimate) for 30 gallon contains 10 cerith snails, 9 nassarius snails, 1 fighting conch, 3 peppermint shrimps and 2 serpent sea stars (25 critters in all)

So if we take a thumbsuck you require 1-2 critters per gallon for an effective CUC - obviously the balance between hermits/snails and the bigger critters is also important.

I get the impression that ZA peeps try to focus on hardware and reactors and these sorts of things to get clean tanks - instead of keeping it natural.

You need something to clean the substrate so think they'll have a cuc even though they have the fancy gadgets.

My long term goal is to have a skimmerless, air-lift powered, ultra-low-power setup with a massive macro tank to do cleaning duties. My current tank is probably not suitable due to the overflow and return design, but wina manje! ONE DAY IS ONE DAY.
