I have all my old crushed coral lying around, would it not be better if I put over the DSB, so that it can trap some of the nitrates and let the DSB work it easier. The way I see it, right now any waste is flowing over the DSB, and can't really settle on it. Now if there was crushed coral, it could easily trap some of the detris, and work it from there.

Would it work and you guys agree or am I talking skimate. Just a thin layer.

i wouldnt do that, cause more harm then good, i would add some clumps rather then a layer, but my cheato traps alot of dirt

I know some people prefer the DSB to be of different types of substrate.
Reason, different life forms prefer more coarse material than others. So a mix bag of sorts is better than a uniform single type of substrate. But I will not go wall to wall with a layer on top.

Rather do what Dallasg suggested. Maybe a patch here or there.

Check Mudsharks Tread "Down Below" See you replied on it as well. Biggest part is the same, but it looks like the left top part (entrance part) of his DSB got small shells and other stuff laying around on top. Not a lot.

But for me the same as for Dallasg, my Cheato traps enough.

Would it affect the DSB if the crushed coral was placed at the bottom then the sand/aragonite on top of it?
I also have a lot of crushed coral left over from my previous setup.
    Cheers

Shane in my opinion it is a bad idea mixing the two. At the bottom my feeling is especially for burrowing critters that might cause a problem and they wont go there.

I would rather say no to the idea....also wouldnt this have an effect on the anaerobic environment ?

thanks for the advice guys, but just want to ask why not though, I am just trying to understand the science behind it.

no science, they cause no water movement areas and stagnation

magman, Im not a boffin in this area but my thought is putting a layer of CC on top of the DSB will create an area where detrius is trapped (that which is not absorbed by our filter sock, skimmer whatever) and although a certain amount will be consumed by the critters in the DSB, you could end up with a nitrate factory.

but lets see what the DSB gurus say
