Hi guys my crocea clam died, the mantle started degrading. Does anyone know the cause of this? I found these little snails on the inside of the shell, do these snails perhaps feed on the clam?

Did you change anything in the tank? Sometimes its because the clam doesnt get enough lighting. Various types of snails eat clams too.

What lighting do you have? Did the clam die quickly or slowly over time? How long have you had the clam?
There are certain species of snails that do predate on snails and even bristle worms can irritate them.

Other possible things to look at,

Perhaps a fish or a hermit nippling at it?

did you does any meds in the tank?

Did you remove it from a rock it was attached to?

The snails could be the culprit, but depending on the snails. Some do attack clams. Others like nassarius snails will eat the dead tissue. They are not the guilty party, just like vultures, just doing their cleanup duty.

So to answer that question you need to post a clear picture of the snails.

Whelks and pyramidellid snails are apparently clam eaters.

I moving toward the snails. The pic is very unclear, is this the best pic? Do the snails look like these? They are very small.

    Not all of them.

That last picture are vegetarian snails, limpits. Its not them. They will be after the new algae growth on the shell.

To confirm, turn them around and take another picture from the other side.

And if pyramidellid snails, look at the underside of the clam, they are small snails.

tonight, late, long after the lights went out. Inspect the clam with a flashlight. If it is predatory pyramidellid snails, you could find them eating the clam. The will sit next to the mantle, sucking the soft tissue out via their proboscis (a tube like extension). But they are small. Less than 6 or 7mm, and light colored. Not easy to spot.
