    Hey fellow mariners:thumbup:

I have 5 hermits in my tank... 1 red 3 blue leg and one white.

what happens if I do not put in shells? will they just stay in that shell?

and if I have to get shell how urgent would it be?

and where in CT can I get some nice shells? round ones

They will fight and the more aggressive one can kill the other (more likely) smaller hermit. Only to find out too late that he does not fit.

Only need 1 or 2 extra shells.

You need to have extra shells in your tank.
As the hermits grow they will require lerger shells. If there arent any spare shells lying around, the crabs will most likely start fighting each other for shells or klilling off snails to steal their shells.
Most beaches around cape twon should have shells.

Yeah, you need to have bigger shells for them to grow into, I recently found one of my hermit crabs sitting naked on top of my monti, he had shed/moulted and also discarded his shell, I rushed out to buy some shells but when I got back he had disappeared, I put the shells in but no idea if he survived or not.

Just out of curiosity ... If there are no bigger shells in the tank for the hermits to "grow" into do they just get too big for their shels and can't fit anymore then become fish food or do they try to maintain their size? Lets take for granted that the tank is not all that huge for them to figure out that there are no bigger shells or is their IQ not that high?

Hi Duri. Where did you find shells? I have four hermits and need new shells. Went down to a few spots in Blouberg beach, but did not find any? Maybe I should go low tide.

That will look lank funny, will try when they reach that size. I've heard of a guy whose hermit got so big, he used a modified space case!!

Awesome, I will go check it out on Saturday. have to get shells soon, as one molted today, but no shells available. Cant see him or his shell anywhere, only his leg thingies floating around. :(
