I have found 2 legs from a blue legged hermit in a rock, with a bit of thigh?? The tank only has live rock (3 weeks old), 2 x crabs and 2 x banded shrimps. Any ideas as to what could have attacked a crab? I bought the crabs[IMG]

from the LFS - it was in a tank with 9 crabs. I have had them a week.

Are you sure its part of the crab and not just skeleton from shedding?

Its a piece of crab. The legs are full (not skin) and even a bit of thigh meat

Saw a piece of Tonga rock in a lfs with a 6cm black crab hiding inside 2 days ago - so I think the chance is there.. but I got mostly 1 cm little crabs as hitchhikers. Don't think they can do that to a hermit . 459b could be right...

Look at the piece of leg carefully..sometimes the shedded bits can look like they have meat on them.
But tt could be a hitch hiker that did it. Do you ever hear clicking at night? Are their burrows around/under the liverock?
MIGHT have been one of the other crabs fighitng with it. Do you ahve spare shells in the tank for when the hermits need new ones?

The legs still have the claws on. They are full legs from the claw up to the meat. We have got spare shells lying around. One of the crabs (the larger) has been interested in them. This crab is also more active. The smaller is not very active. I haven't heard any noises from the rocks at night. I'll listen tonight.

id suggest doing a 'night crawl' with a torch and a red filter over it. have a careful look at the rock for hitchikers and other crabs\mantises well after the lights have gone off

A mantis is an evil shrimp that will kill your fish. Look at the link

Many thanks everyone. Hopefully only shedding but I'll keep a watch out for mantis anyway.
