    Hi chaps,

I have a young system with some base (bare) and live rock (with coraline algae). Is there a method to encourage or speed up the growth of coraline algae? I've heard someone say "use Purple up".

    Any suggestions.

    Snake oil IMO.

Keep your system stable with loads of Calcium and light and it will grow. Try get some different strains from fellow reefers

Hi Tim. Should you wish to encourage coralline Algae growth. Keep your Ca : 380-420, Alk : 8-10DKH, Mg : 1350 and Po4 : as low as possible. Dont waste your money on other additives. :)

Agreed, and once you got it, you may start swearing, it can become a devil chewing your Ca and Alk, and generally making a nuisance of itself - you will need to invest in blade technology to get it off the glass and pumps require acid baths to clear the devil.

(not a fan of coralline as you may have guessed)

But other than that, very pretty if under control.

High water flow, high levels of alkalinity, and adequate levels of magnesium and calcium - and, contrary to popular belief, not too bright lighting (T5's would be better than MH).

I used Purple Up but didn't see a fast improvement. I think it just takes time. You can try speed up the process by placing your pink rocks leaning against the bare ones - you'll see coraline grows faster on the bare rock where it touches the pink rock- results within a week or two.

And if he takes that same finger out the water and put it in his mouth, he can tell you all your water parameters...
