Cooking Live Rock

Just a question on this... I was actually doing some reading on re-seeding dead live rock.

I've got some live rock that is now dead. to make sure I don't have any issues with the rock previously should I go with this process of cooking the rock as well ?

Hi TurboSnail - the process that we all described and suggested previously, is basically the same process as "cooking" the live rock.... And yes - you should do it, as there are bound to be a LOT of detritus on the inside of the "Dead" live rock. You should perhaps get some pieces of good quality live rock, and place these pieces in the 2 containers where you want to place the "dead" live rock into.

You can also dose some bacteria into the water, (ie container where the "dead" live rock is going in - salt water) ie PSB, or Cycle, or even Bio Vital....

Hi guys been reading about cooking live rock as my tank is full of gha and even my back glass is full i scrub and remove as much as possible, i even bought new live rock and that's starting to get gha on it. I raised my mag to 1500 and dose kalkwasser daily, now I'm thinking of cooking half now and the other half when the first half is done, what i want to know is will the live rock still be live and will base rock eventually become live rock. On some of the rock i have zoos and ears what will happen to them as don't want to loose them , and what about the back glass that's so full of gha. I also use a liquid po4 remover and phosguard in a reactor.

cooking does not mean putting the rocks in a pot and on the stove. Just need to make sure you do not have that mixed up.

Anyway, your corals will not like the process.

For the back panel, just scrape it off with a blade while siphoning the tank. Think of it as an In-tank algae scrubber.
