I have had the live rock in my tank for quite some time now and keeping a fish only tank, there isnt any corals growing on the live rock. There would however be plenty of organsims, like small fan worms etc.

Would it be benneficial to cook my live rock before i attempt to start keep soft corals.

There is some red velvet like algae on them and they are no doubt full of detritus.

Hi Dohn - if you CAN do this, I would definitely agree that it would be tremendously beneficial.....

Nope, fish have never been sick, touch wood. The tangs got a little bit of white spot in the beginning. but thats normal for tangs.

If you do not have algae problems, why destroy the living organism that you want?
If rock is already in tank for 6 months, they are cycled and got a lot of live in there.

Rather blast them clean with a stong powerhead
or at worst take them out and rince them in old salt water in a big tub, dip, take out, swirl, whatever to flush detritus out. What ever is left inside is food for the beneficial bacteria in the rock.

    about 7 months now.
RiaanP's idea sounds good, i also dont really want good organsims dying. What about a little brushing with a stiff brush, like a tooth brush.

Dohn you can use a toothbrush or a nailbrush to scrub algae off, but do take some old tank water in a tub and scrub the rocks in thr. But do not forget to rince the rocks off and then blow with a strong power head before you put back into DT...

I 'm with Riaan on this one. You must have rocks in your head :) if you cook healthy rock.. Cooking is only to be used as a extreme remedy for an extreme out of control infestation

And no scrubbing should the cooking really be called for. Rather just blow off waste and rinse in water change water

    Hmmm,
So no removing from the tank and sun drying for a few days then blasting with the WAP?

@sunburst, What is the difference between cooking and curing LR?

Curing - Shipping causes massive die off. Sponges are the big concern. Great when alive ...but take them out of water...even briefly and they die. (Strong Sulphur smell) Curing allows time for much of this noxious waste to removed by skimming ... carbon or simply by dilution.

Cooking - During the life of many tanks that we read of, they unfortunately go through some type of infestation. More often than not a lower order life form dominates and slowly out competes for resources. The most common would be the nuisance algaes. The concept of cooking deprives your rock of light; punishing all life... and then relies on bacteria to consume the resulting waste. Squeaky clean rock is the result... Unfortunately damage is not limited to the lower order life forms.

Yes as I under stand it cooking it will not benefit you and if yo do it is not live rock any more but just decorative rock. Another point to remember is that even the pink algae will bleach to WHITE. Then it will look like those aquariums in the 60s white, bleached and "dead"
