Just a tip if it is a FW tank make sure you don't use that over head canopy filter as it's metal and will rust :)

all depends on the size of your tank

DECIDE whether you want a fish only or reef tank then ----->

1- i would throw in there a protein skimmer no matter what the size (if you have a nano ... boyu skimmers are really nice and do the job)

2- for the substrate use a cup of sand (from an established tank ... if u have access to one) and fill the rest with Aragonite or regular SW sand (you pick) personally i prefer the first because of calcium content

3- Live rock (for a large tank use 50-50 dry live rock) to save money .. if money is not an issue use live (to save time) AFTER INSPECTING AND CURING THE ROCK

4-READ about the nitrogen cycle (here the test kit is your best friend)

5- Do research before adding Live stock

    6- Enjoy your tank

    and good luck :1:
