    Guys

Took the big step on Saturday, and bought an internal cone bubble blaster 3000. Impressive piece of skimmer. Only problem - noise. My sump is fairly deep, so had to build an eggcrate stand for it. I do not hear the pump, but (guessing here) around the bubble plate upwards in the skimmer itself. Sounds like a low growling noise. Anybody had something like this before? What can be done?

    Thanks
    Chris

chris most skimmers pumps will take some time to run in, there can even be as much a a horrible droning noise from time to time but it will subside as the impellor/shaft seats in..

takes a few days, if it persists longer than 2 weeks contioniously with the unit running 24/7 then i would approach the retailer, but it is the norm

congratulations on the skimmer purchase, you did some good homework before purchasing.,. good on you.

Thanks Leslie. Yes - expensive, but already seeing the results in the cup!
It certainly sounds like the droning noise you mention.

Thanks Tremayn - have communicated with Ziyaad the last few weeks regarding my skimmer purchase. I have seen the BB in action previously, and they certainly were silent as well. Thought maybe having some noise because it is mounted on eggcrate and not solid glass bottom.

put some polystyrene on th bottom and place the platform on that should help. they are silent skimmers with only a slight hum audible. if u can hear it while u sitting and admiring ur tank than there is an issue. i would give it a week to run in and after that u will be away.

Great thanks Ziyaad - will let it run for a week, then go the polystyrene route.

That solution was for the impeller getting stuck it seems and not the noise.

I have that exact skimmer Tony, and can also say that its noise levels are higher than what I expected. It is a humm that you can not get rid off. Been running this skimmer for 10 months and the noise levels never changed.

And when I originally asked about this skimmer, everyone said it was dead silent. Thats when I decided my definition of dead silent is not the same as others.

Now I'm worried Marius as I have ordered one. Can you hear the noise through a cabinet?

If you have a fully enclosed/sealed cabinet it should be ok but I reckon you will still hear a slight humm. My cabinet is open at the back and I can hear it. You are welcome to come past my place if you want to hear what it sounds like. And if yours is silent, I would love to compare as I was told this is the expected noise from the pump.

Thanks for the invite Marius, I'll PM you. I was thinking that the bit of plastic behind the impeller in the link I gave could be aggravating the noise factor.

I will check that little plastic bit on the impeller out the next time I do a major skimmer clean.

I work in Joburg (off William Nicol), live in Pretoria. Can I maybe visit and listen to your skimmer as well? I am available from 15:00 afternoons.

    Thanks
    Chris

normaly what i do is add another washer at the bottom of the impellor and this sorts the problem out,if not return the skimmer or pump and demand a new 1,as Scott(the importer) will sort your problem out

@IMarine - thanks - I suppose the washer should be plastic, not metal?

Unfortunately yes. I am visiting mariusmeyer this afternoon to compare noise levels. If his is a lot more silent, I will follow Tony's advice and clean up the plastic on the impeller.
