What type of jellies are you looking into?
I guess you would need some type of specialized tank.

Hi there, and welcome to MASA.

Jellies are quite specialized creatures, requiring special tanks with alternate flow designs.

Now, should you be able to find / build a tank suitable for a jelly's needs, your next obstacle would be to find some jellies in our LFS's.

Thirdly, they require food of their own, which I also cannot recall seeing in any of our lFS's.

So, although these creatures appear to be low maintenance, once the tank is up and running, you may run into all sorts of hassle with supplies.

This may seem like a great idea (I myself just love to stare at the Jelly tanks in aquariums, mesmerized by their grace) I would personally suggest rethinking that idea...

    All the best.

    Come here challenge!

I have changed my post to "come here challenge", simply because if we keep saying its difficult, nearly impossible, then we'll never have jellyfish in our SA home aquariums. Yes its good to support the existing marine aquarium industry, but I do believe there is growth needed everywhere, even if it starts with just a change in mindset. So where do I find such a cylindrical tank, live shrimp, and above all the jellyfish.... No small task I admit, but it cant be impossible. Enough research, emails, phone calls, and some money too, should see it through. But give me time, it wont happen overnight. One thing seems certain, very few if any members on this site have tried it, so no use searching here for advice - right?

You have decided to take on a new field.
There are a couple of links available on this topic on the net.
AFAIK there are no suppliers for anything Jelly-related in South Africa, you might thus need to import all your stock.

Also, you could speak to the big aquariums in SA, they may be able to give you some assistance and guidance.

Quick link to a starter kit - US based.

had a kriessel i chucked out when i moved. oops. just remember water flow needs to be so slow as to be almost unnoticable. the kriessels at the research centre in ct woild have been a good place to get idea of flow etc.

    My 'other' hobby

I like finding things, and yes I might even be good at it - so here we go.... wish me all the luck you've got - I'm probably going to need it!!
I will start with the aquariums in South Africa, and meanwhile do some research on how to get those jelly babies flown here!

Keep us posted on your progress. I'm keen to give this a shot as well. Maybe keep a blue bottle or 2, for when coffee doesn't hit the spot anymore.

There's enough species of jellies found along our coast to pick and choose from - no need to import anything - just plan a collecting trip:)

You have my full support - like with the sea-horses I keep only determination and a willingness to be the first one - will make the difference. We need more people willing to try something new.

Here are some nice links to Kriesel tank and jellyfish tank builds. Kriesel tanks are a very important part of raising captive bred Sea-horses and any success you have will benefit us all..
