Can anyone tell me how long does it take before a clown will enter an anemone? I have a Hiterectis Crispa, and a Percular clown. The nennie is about the size of a saucer, and the clown about 3cm only - so size isn't the issue. I had the Nennie in first for about a month, and introduced the clown on Saturday, yet the clown only hangs around the powerhead most of the time...

Hi Jaco - in my past experience, it can take up to 2 weeks before the clown realizes that there is a nemmie in the tank. Also - IF the clown is tank-bred, it would not always even know what a nemmie is. BUT, instinct takes over sooner or later....
    Give the clown chance, mate!

    Jaco,

give the clown a little time to acclimitize and get used to the new reef ......

If it is not hosting it could be one of two reasons that i know of .... firstly as mentioned above it is still unsure of the environment or secondly I have been told that some farm propogated clowns do not always host nennies ....

most perc are tank breed and they may never host the nenny, i've only had sucessful hosting with other clowns. give it time put some food near the nenny and see if the lown will take it from or to the nenny

Thanks, I also thought it will still take a little time... Will wait some more, but it's hard to explain to my 5 yr old why nemo doesn't want to stay in its' home...:)

Tell him times are hard and no banks will grant nemo a bond unless he has a 20% deposit. This is a result of the sub-prime econimic problem that resulted from people in america

Make sure your nemmie is a Crispa. They are often confused with Sebae Anemone.

If it is the latter the Clown won't ever host in it as only Clarki's or Maroon do.

Nah, I'm pretty sure that it is a Crispa. But still bleached so maybe that is also a reason - yet I saw other clowns hosting a nennie that is also bleached...

But how would I know what the diffs is between a crispa and sebae?

Impossible... Sorry...:( It is sitting on the substrate, and it has burried itself quite deep in there. I know from pruchase that the base was not red though... But if that was due to bleaching I'm not sure...

Clowns develope a mucus layer over their bodies to make them immune to the sting of an anemone. If taken away from an anemone or if they're tank bread, the mucus layer dissappears or is non-existant. If introduced to a tank again with a nemmie, the mucus layer will first develope again before the clown hosts.

What I have found with my clowns is that they will host in anything they want, just as long as it is on the RHS of the tank.

I also thought that, but how would it know where the right hand side is? And then, his right or my right?
