    I need some urgent advice.

I started my tank 7 weeks ago (1000L), I have put 2 fish (cardinal, foxface) and 2 cleaner shrimps in so far to see how things go. Everything was going rosy, until 2 days ago when I found both my shrimps belly up! I tested me water and everything seems to be ok. The only issue is my nitrates are about 15ppm, which I am told isnt a problem. I dont understand what could have gone wrong, the only thing I can think of is we had pest control in the house, but they assured me the tank wouldnt be affected. My fish,my mushroom anemones and tube worms all are fine.

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks, Pete

What are your other patrameters ?

    pH, dKh, Temp, SG etc.

Are you sure they are the actual shrimp and not a eco-skeleton ?

How long were the shrimps in the tank ?

Hi Pete, from my experience pest control could be a culprit...I lost 3 triggers due to my maid spraying doom close to the tank. Invertabrates are MUCH more sensitive, also remember your skimmer will be pumping the poison into the tank . But having said that nitrates of 15 ppm is high IMHO .....bring that down.

Also you are saying everything seems fine ? A bit more info would be cool to see if you are not missing something

I take it your fish are OK ?

Could be the exo-sceleton(as warr said) sometimes the shrimps hide away after they shed but just for a few days...

Have you managed to remove the remains and if so did it smell like somthing had died
or not, why i ask is because when i remove the exo-sceleton from my tank they smell like nothing really but im sure if there is body flesh you going to smell somthing.

Thanks for everyone's reply - Ph 8.4, alh 2.5, temp (has got up to 28), SG1.022. I am adding some Kalkwasser today to try to up the Alh using a drip set.

I dont think the shrimps has just shed and gone to hide, it would be strange them doing it at the same time. I will keep my hopes up! The remains didnt smell much though.

How can i get my nitrates down? Water change? Is that really advisable so soon after starting my tank? My fish are perfectly ok, swimming around and eating fine!

Would be glad to hear your further thoughts.

    Regards,

    Pete

Alk is very low and could have caused the problem. How long have the shrimps been in the tank ?

Shrimps can't handle huge swings in almost any parameter so if your temp, SG, pH or Alk changed rapidly you will find your fish not worrying too much, but shrimps can react negatively.

    Hi Pete

I am also new to this but a water change (usually 20%) every week or two is advisable to keep nitrates down. Hell I do a min of 1 x 25l a week (have a 50gallon) and this helps keep the nitrates down and algea growth!...

If anyone can back me up or correct me about the above please do so...

Pete, exoskeletons when shed are very soft, you would be able to tell if its an exo or a shrimp simply by handling it
