Hi, I have seen someone put hermit crabs on his dsb, he said the top layer of his dsb went black after running his tank for awhile and the hermit cleaned it all up, is it necessary or advisable to place a hermit or similar on urban dsb?

yes, for a while. To clean it up.

But you need to monitor them. Once the job is done they could run out of food. Need then to remove some. Numbers depends on DSB size and hermit sizes. They will eventually try to go for the more difficult food when they run out of food, like the worms in the sand.

Will they clean up the brown silt that ends up in the corners of your sump, or must you have a DSB?

Ok, so now I know bout the crabs, my next question is, where do I get the worms from that you mentioned in the dsb? And then also, how does a dsb work if the water is flowing over it and not through it?

if they can eat it, they will, no matter if its in a corner, on sand or on a silver platter.
