Hi guys does anybody have experience keeping clams and the behaviour?
Im not sure what type of clam i have but its 10cm big the mantle is purple with blue iridescent speckels on it i have for bout 5 months nw. Today i did my normal water change and a couple of hours later the clam started releasing this fine dust with slime in the water and this have been going on for 30min now im a bit concerned any advise. Temp is 26. Ph 8.3. Kh 10. Calcium 480ppm. Waste untraceable. The clam is in a 1.2m reef tank where i got 8 t5 54w lights on 2 blue and 6 white

Where the water parameters changed during the WC?

    Could it not be spawning?

Not a guru on clams but don't think the drop in Kh and Ca would've caused any problems....

Think they would feed on them.

It won't be eggs, clams need to be fully grown to release eggs. Smaller clams can release "sperm" but recover specific circumstances for this to happen.

It could also be the clam expelling waste that has accumulated in it valve.

PS: Get a pic of your clam, as the different species have different living requirements

Thanks for the info guys the clam has stopped releasing that stuff in the water and now my water is filled with fine particles it could be sperm or releasing waste not really sure. The clam not fully open as usuall but will check tommorow when al the lights are on and the smaller hole where the stuff came out is moving up and down. Will post a pic as soon as the camera charged thanks again u guys.

I think the best thing to do is go onto a specialist clam forum and get advice there. Dunno if there are any clam specialists here. Even if there are it can't help to get more opinions. Good luck.

Is the opening of the clam gaping or slightly open?
