I have a 1400 l/h pump, which would give me 14 times circulation per hour.
Someone suggested 25 times is better.

In reefcentral some reckon anything between 6-10 times per hour is enough.

Is it always the more the better? (excluding systems with DSB)

(I am not referring to in-tank circulation, only through the filtration system)

That all depends on what you want to keep as some corals like more flow than other.
If you have ever been diving you will know that the flow that the coral get on the reefs is quite strong and from what I have seen the stock pump is just not enough flow.
The other thing is with the spray bar being at the surface you get a lot of dead spots.
I think a minimum of another 2000 litres is needed if keeping low flow coral.

My coral are quite happy at the moment and I have 2 extra powerheads with a combined rate of over 5000LPH.

Ive got the standard pump connected directly to the spray bar. Then I added another pump(2000l/h),pumping water from the last chamber back to the 1st chamber just to increase the flow through my filter media and it has made a big difference.

My only concern is that when I set up the tank (I plan to put Purigen in a pool sock, and Phosguard in a bag) that that will restrict the flow on high volume of flow..

Ive got purigen, phosguard, chaeto and nitrate r (i know its overkill but I feed my corals alot)and with the xtra flow I added its fine. You can run the phosguard in a sock but for the purigen you will have to get a fine bag as the media is very fine. I use "the bag" and its lasted me a long time. worth the money spend.

Don't know "the bag" - in my previous setup I used the pool gobbler sock for the Purigen. I do have a net bag for the Phosguard..

    Thanx

Thanx Belinda - Unfortunately I cant order from Amazon - at least I know what it looks like now...

Will either go pool gobbler sock, or something similar - was also thinking that material stuff they used to strain coffee with in the olden days... :p

Quite a few shops stocks "the bag" or something similar. It is not to expensive and last forever.
