    Hi Guys

Has anyone bought chinese MH bulbs before of ebay? [ame="http://www.ebay.com/itm/150W-Metal-DE-Halide-Lamp-Aquarium-Tank-Bulb-HQI-Light-8K-10K-14K-20K-optional/301092352954?_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D23309%26meid%3D7590380806551089246%26pid%3D100009%26prg%3D9834%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D301199374528"]Metal Halide[/ame]

They are a lot cheaper than the ones you buy at the LFS. I can buy 4 for the same price as one from my LFS.

So just like to know if anyone has tried them?

Well with my little knowledge in the marine hobby, anything cheap and Chinese normally don't work so well.

Trust me ive burned my fingers so many times before

You'd need to check if they were made specifically for aquariums.
I'd be concerned that's it's a quarter of the price, prob means it doesn't deliver the right quality of light needed for corals.

Jason I understand your point but I think every product should be taken on merit and not by just because it from China is not good.

With regards to cheap chinese products. I bought this temp controller off ebay. It is also 4 time cheaper as anything I could find locally and it works better than the german one.

People are to quick to jump to the conclusion that just because its cheaper is crap.

Not that I'm against Chinese products, but Unless you can get the exact specs, I'd stay away from it.

I know most things are made in china, i work with many Chinese factories. Your branded stuff manufactured in china has better quality control than your no name branded stuff. Many things get copied and is just as good, but theres a reason why its so much cheaper IMO, i might be wrong and i understand where you going with this but unfortunately will my experience with Chinese factories and actually see so many making pirate products and taking so many shortcuts is scary.

I took a chance almost 2 years ago and bought a MH bulb - so far it is STILL going strong and i have had no issues with it! To be honest - in terms of Chinese manufacturing - i think one or 2 stories of how cr@p their stuff is makes them look bad but in general we don;t hear of the MILLIONS of success purchases. I purchase a LOT of machine tools from China and Hong Kong and I can promise you they stand up to the best of the best which cost LITERALLY, in some cases, 100x more!!

I think this caught me out in the UK.

Check if the bulb states HQI or HIT on it. The proper bulb is HQI(hydragyrum quartz iodide), if it's HIT then its just a weaker bulb that emits less light.

That's my experience with Ebay bulbs, if theyre proper HIQ bulbs then score!

It does say HQI. So as they say the proof is in the poeding. Will comapre the R800 SA bough bulb vs the R150 HK bulb in a faceoff and give my results once i have the new bulbs.

I got my MH today. :yeahdude: I ordered them on the 30th of June. 18 Days from order to collect. Item had international tracking. Payed R22 to collect them. Will test them out tomorrow and give an update. It was shipped in a small polystyrene box. Total cost was R322 for 2 MH globes. R161 per globe.

Pics of packaging and of globes.

Here is my observation thus far. The two globs appear to be brighter taking in to consideration that the other original 2 globs are 2 months old already. Unfortunately I don't have a PAR meter to confirm this.

So now I comes down to how long they last and how does the corals grow under them. So I will update this thread from time to time and giving updates on the globs.

The globs are on 8 hours a day Monday to Friday and 10 hours on Saturday and Sunday.

I can say that I am very happy with buying the two globs. It was worth the risk. Even if they only last 6 months it is still a massive saving on buying them locally.

Will keep you posted. If you have any question please feel free to ask.
