    Howdy,
I added some cheato to my DSB approx 2-weeks back.
The cheato is going black on top and there is also some part turning an ash grey color, is the cheato dying ? I have one 18watt energy spotlight (par 38 style).

Might it be starving i.e. not enought nitrates/phosphate in water?

pictures... also maybe get a higher wattage globe.

when you say spotlight which light do you mean.

You not referring to a powercompact?

I saw these globes once. Do you point the bulb onto the screen? I would go for higher wattage. 32w or 2 x 23w make sure the globe is close to 4000K / 6400K

Photo's would really help. I used that exact globe and then changed to normal energy saving globes...made the world of difference!

    Ok, here's some photos.
This of the sump area and light, about 25cm between lamp and cheato.

    and this is the cheato
    [IMG]

the red circles the black bits which i suppose is dead cheato,
the blue is where the cheato is turning ash grey-ish.

so is this then due to light, food or both? any further ideas ?

I have a 20W energy saver with a DIY reflector made from foil over the bulb so that the light is directed over the chaeto and it seems to be doing ok...

I got the idea of using a 50W downlighter when I went to see Lanzo's shop just as he was about to move, I loaded in my Chaeto and haven't had any problems at all. It appears happy with the lighting and the setup and is and is growing just fine...They are not expensive and you can do the wiring very neatly if you just give it a little thought before rushing to get the light on, if it takes another 30min to install, it won't make any difference to anything

That looks like cyno also growing on the cheato. If the tank is new. This will go away cool.

    Fully agree with the downlights
