    Hey guys,

I want to get rid of some of my bulky cables and wiring in my tank so I am putting together a Junction Box that will have a 220VAC/24VDC power supply in it. I wanted to use this Power Supply to feed my two Vertex Illumilux LED lights.

These are high-end industrial power supplies that are usually used in supplying industrial equipment such as PLC and Field Instrumentation.

Would this work or would I have to use the dedicated Meanwell Driver that was supplied with the lights ??

Here are some of the features of the Power Supply:

Its basically one big expensive transformer for 220V to 24V. Or am I missing it?

I thought I would replace all the transformers on my devices with a single 400w PC power supply but while checking it out, the amps were too high and blew my voltmeter. This scared me so I gave up on the idea. Try and match the total power to the right sized transformer or you may blow the lights.

No, its a regulated switch mode power supply. But what you are saying is exactly what I think the Meanwell "drivers" are - a 220VAC to 24VDC transformer and rectifier .... is that the case ?

The transformer will step down the voltage from 220VAC to 24VAC and it must then go through a rectifier circuit. That is the basis of any AC to DC power supply. The size of the transformer (usually rated in VA and hence W) will determine what current the transformer is able to deliver. However, the devices connected to the transformer only draw the amount of current they require - the current is not forced on the devices.

You probably blew your voltmeter for a different reason, it wasn't "too many amps"

Ok, thanks. I thought it was the Amps because the voltmeter has two connections. One fused for less than 10A and an unfused for >10A. I had mistakenly used the <10A connection and this caused the failure. I assumed that the effect of too much current on a fuse would affect my other electronics in a similar way.
