Had a good look at my sump and the amount of gunk trapped in the chaeto is really amazing. It acts like a sponge trapping so much detritus.

I have a filter sock in the sump inlet yet there is still so much gunk that gets trapped in the chaeto which cant be good for overall nutrient count in the system. What do you guys do about this, just rinse it when u do a water change or what ?

Iv got a similar problem.. Along with detritus, there's lotsa life in there as well, from worms to pods and other strange creatures..

I give it a shake once or twice a week.
Also you need to turn it over, if it does not tumble by itself.

Yip, it does trap a lot of things. Just shake it out.

I would say better to sort out better filtration at the inlet to the sump rather than concidering ditching the chaeto

Take the chaeto out once a week and blast the gunk out under the tap before putting it back. If you want to save the goggas shake it in a bucket of tankwater first. As RianP said if it does not tumble it needs turning over.

as the guys mentioned above, You have to ensure that you shake it and clean it, it does a fantastic job in nutrient uptake esp if light properly. Also harvest often
