I got involved in this hobby / lifestyle around October last year and this is already my 2nd upgrade! From a small 35L Jebo to a custom 65L and now to a custom 150L. Unfortunately, thanks to space limitations, I dont see myself getting anything bigger in the near future. This one is going to be a bit of a squeeze but I will make it fit :)

I had a custom tank done with a built-in sump in the rear:
    Total Tank : 700x500x450 = 157L
    DT: 700x350x450 = 110L
    Sump: 700x150x450 = 47L

    Base: 10mm
    Sides: 6mm
DT & sump divided using 5mm white perspex.

The sump has been split into 3 chamber:
    1st Chamber: 150
    2nd Chamber: 400
    3rd Chamber: 150

There are 2 baffles between the 1st and 2nd chamber about 30mm apart. Water flows under the 1st baffle and over the 2nd and then over the 3rd baffle from chamber 2 to chamber 3. 1st chamber will house the protein skimmer and a filter floss to catch the crap from going into the 2nd chamber. The 3rd chamber will house the return pump which is rated for 1000LPH. The 2nd chamber I was thinking of doing a DSB, but I would like some info / advice.

The following will be going in:
    1 x Resun SP1800 return pump (1000LPH)
    1 x Boyu WG308 protein skimmer
    1 x Lifetech 150W Heater
    1 x Resun Waver 4000 (4000LPH)
    1 x Resun Waver 2000 (2000LPH) - if required
    2 x Odyssea Dual 24W T5 hoods (each unit has 1x 10000k white & 1x blue/actinic)
DT substrate: playsand with a small (4.5kg) bag of arag-alive sand
DSB: playsand seeded with a cup of sand from another DSB

I will DIY each of the light hoods and add a 500mm strip of blue LEDs. I will also DIY a phos reactor sometime during August (hopefully). I have lots of rock, thanks to a generous local reefer.

Here are some pics of the tank and the cabinet I had made:

Just trying to get my RO unit to make decent RO water with a low TDS. Done nearly 100L and only getting a TDS of 8. Then I can start mixing water and get this tank running.

Any advice, especially on the DSB, would be most appreciated.

Does your RO unit run through DI resin as a last step?

What is the footprint size of your DSB area? And how deep is that chamber. The sand should be 150mm, so how deep will the water be above the sand?

Not yet. Waiting for stock to come in to Dorry Pets. It was a 2nd hand unit that was still very new but didn't come with a DI pod. Hopefully have it connected by the weekend. Made nearly 100L and still not getting a tds of 0.

    DSB: 600 cm squared (40x15)
    DT: 2450 cm squared (70x35)
So the DSB surface area is about a quarter of the size of my DT. If my calculations are correct. :whistling:

The chamber is 350mm deep at the lowest point so there will be about 200mm of water above the DSB at 150mm.

If your reading is 8 currently chances are good it will be 0 when you add DI resin.

Cool, perhaps order extra resin so that you have at home when you need to replace it in the future, DI Resin is not too expensive and if you can get the colour changing type it's quite useful as you can see when you need to replace the resin. Obviously opnly applicable if your resin holder is see through.

    yes, 24.5%
The smallest DSB I run successfully in relation to display was 33%. You nee to seed this one properly. Maybe a liverock piece, just suspended above the sand. And the space above the live rock you can house cheato.

Else, look into a NP reactor. In your case maybe better.

When you say suspended above the sand, how? Should I place it on top of a piece of egg crate?

Seeding properly should be done how? Besides using a cup of sand from another DSB, what would you recommend?

Thanks for all the advice!

Will contact Lonzo tomorrow to arrange for the DI resin pod for my RO unit. Had a major water crisis in PE over the last few days so wouldnt have been able to make any RO water this weekend, even if I had the resin pod.

Wish I could get this tank up and running quicker. At the moment its standing in the garage gathering dust while I get my RO water sorted out. But I suppose good things come to those who wait... :)

    What crisis ?

I think it works in your favour. RO unit not yet ready so if you rush it you will have more startup issues then if you wait. (much more algae etc)

If you can why not add a small algae scrubber onto the system

Are you using live rock from your current system or going to cure new rock?

2 water pipes at 2 of the dams feeding PE were broken due to heavy rains last week so some areas were out of water for awhile since Thursday.

I will be using live rock from my current setup. Will look into a small algae scrubber.
